Buyer’s Blunder Number Five –
Not Paying Attention to What
You Have Bid On
Keep Good Records. Keeping good records is very important. Know exactly what you want and how many you need. I had a very interesting experience with a buyer who bought too many Lenox Boehm Bird Plates. She bid on the 1976 Lenox Cardinal Plate and won the bid with $45.00. She emailed me to say that she had made a terrible mistake. She was buying the complete series of these plates for her three daughters and she already owned three of this particular year. She said she was going to pay for it anyway and I could just keep the plate. I emailed back and said no, you don’t have to do that. She was so nice about it that I offered to have her just pay our selling and listing fees and I would relist it and call it even. She insisted saying, “I am going to teach myself a lesson to keep better track of what I am bidding on. I want to pay for the plate.”
I remembered my grandmother always saying “Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth; accept gifts with grace and gratitude.” So I took the lady’s money and kept the plate. We relisted the plate and it sold for $52.00 the second time.
Don’t Bid on the First Item You See. Do your research and know what you are buying. Sometimes buyers will bid hastily without fully checking our all of the similar items up for sale. When this happens, you can miss a better item that you see later. Take good notes and look around before you actually bid. Remember to check both auctions and eBay store items.
Don’t Leave Negative Feedback Until You Have Tried all Remedies. Usually, negative feedback comes from customers that are relatively new to eBay. As a seller, it is very frustrating when a new eBay buyer leaves you negative feedback. Please contact the seller, file a claim with eBay and file a claim with Paypal (if that is how you paid) before leaving negative feedback. Give the seller plenty of time to remedy the situation. Most sellers are very honest and want to work with you to guarantee your satisfaction. If you feel that you must leave negative feedback, do so on the 90th day so that they can’t turn around and leave you retaliation feedback. After the 90th day, feedback can not be left for an item on eBay.
